A Timeless Legacy

Samudra Koop Tirtha

Welcome to the official website of Samudra Koop Ashram. Situated on the eastern bank of the Ganga in Prayagraj, the Samudra Koop Tirtha holds profound significance in Hindu mythology and history, as described in the Padma Purana. This ancient site is not merely a place of worship but a testament to the dedication of saints and the unwavering faith of devotees over centuries.

Our Sacred Legacy

The story of Samudra Koop Tirtha

The story of Samudra Koop Tirtha is one of faith, resilience, and divine rediscovery. This ancient site, mentioned in the Padma Purana, lay buried for centuries until Yogi Baba Sudarshan Das Ji unearthed it in 1875. Through his tireless efforts and a landmark court ruling, this sacred space was reclaimed for the Hindu community. From the moment the first steps were laid from the Ganga’s banks, the ashram has been a sanctuary for spiritual seekers and a living testament to our rich heritage.

Baba Sudarshan Das Ji, determined to reclaim this sacred space, filed a petition in the court. An English judge was assigned to investigate. During the excavation, several Hindu religious idols were unearthed, including a Shiva Lingam, Nandi, and the footprints of Lord Vishnu. Based on this evidence, the court ordered the land to be vacated within 16 days, rightfully returning the tirtha to the Hindu community.

The Rediscovery of Samudra Koop

The Journey of a Timeless Tirtha

The Rediscovery

In 1875, the spiritual journey of this ashram began when Yogi Baba Sudarshan Das Ji arrived in Prayagraj. The ancient Samudra Koop was buried, and the land was occupied by others. Through a determined legal battle, which included an English judge overseeing the excavation, several Hindu idols were found. This discovery proved the site's sanctity, leading to its return to its rightful purpose.

Building a Sanctuary

With financial support from the Dahiyaawan Estate of Pratapgarh, Baba Sudarshan Das Ji cleaned and restored the well. He built the foundational steps leading up from the river and established a boundary around the five-acre property. Soon after, Thakur Visheshwar Dayal Ji sponsored the construction of the beautiful Shri Ram Janaki Temple, making it a welcoming home for all devotees.

The Mahant Lineage

  • The ashram's legacy was carried forward by a line of dedicated mahants, each contributing to its growth and spiritual mission.

    • Baba Mahavir Das Ji (1905 - 1980): He expanded the ashram, which was donated by Rani Gomti, and established it as the "Samudra Koop Ramanandiya Vaishnav Ashram."

    • Mahant Bharat Das Ji (1980 - 1980): A renowned scholar, he continued the work of service and development.

    • Baba Bal Krishna Das Ji (1980 - 2015): He brought modernity to the ashram with the construction of a paved road, and the installation of electricity and water systems.

    • Mahant Vipin Bihari Das Ji (2015 - Present): Our current mahant, dedicated to upholding tradition and serving the community.
